FOOD PATRIOTS is a film and public engagement campaign with a goal to start a conversation about food that inspires audiences to make a 10% change in the way they buy, eat and talk about food.

After SUPER SIZE ME and FOOD, INC. many Americans are beginning to take their first steps already. That means 10% more fresh veggies, 10% more local food, 10% more organics. FOOD PATRIOTS will show how our buying power, our growing power, our community power challenges an industrialized food system to respond to people’s demand for healthier food and to know from where it comes. It’s not rude to ask about food!

THE SCHEDULE:

• 11:00am – Doors Open
• 11:30am – Brunch is Served

• 12:00pm – Film Starts
• 1:30pm – Post-Film Discussion

THE MENU:

  • Vegan Jack-Fruit Bowl – Delicous mouth-watering mojo jackfruit pulled pork which includes Organic jackfruit pulled “pork” served with white rice, black beans, and plantains

SPECIAL GUEST:

Local Food Patriot Art Friedrich

President of food justice nonprofit Urban Oasis Project and Greenthumb/Golden Touch Popcorn (available at O Cinema).

Art’s passion is to foster multicultural community around healthy food that respects the environment and supports a thriving economy of small businesses. Art has been connecting people with good food for decades- from baking cookies as a little kid with his mom to first ‘Food not Bombs’ meals cooked up from the farmers markets extras in St. Louis, Missouri to protest the Iraq war.  For over a decade he’s been running farms and farmers markets in Miami, FL as the head of Urban Oasis Project, and has been the operations manager of Greenthumb Popcorn for 7 years, which he is now the sole owner and producer of (available at O Cinema, Whole Foods and online.)

Art co-founded Urban Oasis Project in 2009 with Melissa Markham, and they believe that good, clean, healthy food should be accessible to all- so they’ve run Farmers Markets, planted hundreds of gardens with low-income families, and supported many local farms by bringing their produce to markets.  They also ran Verde Farm and Market for 3 years, an organic farm and market in partnership with The Homeless Trust and Carrfour Supportive Housing. Every week they continue to donate a portion of produce to local families in need, and always accept and double SNAP benefits at their markets and their online marketplace.
Art will chat with us about what he is up to and where, and how we can incrementally shift to healthy, organic, local and sustainable foods choices. Join his weekly newsletter at urbanoasisproject.org for Food Justice ramblings, market updates and local event announcements.
