Banned by the Chinese government from screening at the world’s most prestigious animation festival, HAVE A NICE DAY is a morbid, hilarious noir that cuts deep into the greed fueling the Chinese economic miracle.
A city in southern China and a bag containing a million yuan draws several people from diverse backgrounds with different personal motives into a bloody conflict. Philosophising gangster bosses, ageing hitmen, men and women who are tired of the struggle to survive – anyone who happens to have the bag holds on to it tightly, as if it were a lifeline.   Security guard Xiao Zhang steals the bag of money from a gangster to pay for a trip to South Korea that will fix his fiancée’s botched plastic surgery, precipitating a scramble over the loot that has bloody consequences for a lot of people.
Have a Nice Day is a black comedy; the film’s inscrutable, laconic humor holds up a magnifying glass to attitudes to life and social conditions. Humankind’s constant greed meets a deeply insecure country in transition. The reduced realism of the film’s animated tableau heightens and stylizes the mood in today’s China, caught between stasis and a new beginning. The protagonists of this macabre dance wander, strangely lost, through precisely drawn but radically changing cityscapes. The signs and symbols of capitalism impose themselves everywhere, but most people are excluded from the life these signs promise. And Mao Zedong’s image still graces the banknotes.  Eccentric characters, sharp dialogue and evocative visuals, meld with a synth-pop score to make this an entrancing work of art.  Who said animation was for kids?

“Leisurely and deliberate, intelligent and casually cruel, Have a Nice Day is a stone-cold gangster thriller whose violence unfolds in passionless bursts.”
– NEW YORK TIMES

“Liu Jian’s stunning animation is both a visceral thriller and astute political statement about China’s place in the modern world. The film’s elegance and bleak narrative wit, along with politically caustic cynicism – impressively outspoken, given the rigours of the Chinese censorship system – should put “Have a Nice Day” in the international spotlight, with the potential to become the biggest success in adult-targeted art animation since “Waltz With Bashir”. Like no Chinese film you’ve ever seen.”
– SCREEN DAILY

“If Quentin Tarantino remade “Pulp Fiction” as an animated movie set in modern day China, it might look something like “Have a Nice Day,”. Throw in some jarringly modern reference points — Trump, Brexit — and this exuberant, Tarantinoesque display of violence and suspense presents deep perspective on the ripple effects of troubled times around the world. A mesmerizing portrait of despair and the capitalist instincts created by it.”
