Zhenya and Boris are going through a vicious divorce marked by resentment, frustration and recriminations. Already embarking on new lives, each with a new partner, they are impatient to start again, to turn the page – even if it means threatening to abandon their 12-year-old son Alyosha. Until, after witnessing one of their fights, Alyosha disappears.

Winner of the Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes, the new film from Russian master Andrey Zvyagintsev (LEVIATHAN) is an intense study of a family torn apart by divorce, in which the former husband and wife are each more interested in starting their lives over with their respective new partners than in tending to their 12-year-old son — until the boy suddenly goes missing without a trace.

“Toward the end of this searing, finally overwhelming film, it’s unclear which is the more disturbing realization: that Alyosha was lost long before he went missing, or that you don’t really want him to be found.”
– LOS ANGELES TIMES

“Two representative moments define Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Loveless — and they are among the most devastating, harrowing things I’ve ever seen on a screen.”
– VILLAGE VOICE

“Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Loveless is a stark, mysterious and terrifying story of spiritual catastrophe: a drama with the ostensible form of a procedural crime thriller. It has a hypnotic intensity and unbearable ambiguity which is maintained until the very end.”
– THE GUARDIAN
