“NEW GERMAN FILM of the 1970s”
FITZCARRALDO
(Presented by the Miami Beach Film Society)

Werner Herzog’s masterpiece is the story of the antics of a creative, opera loving mad genius in the Amazon, a man determined to transport a three hundred ton steamboat over a mountain from one river to another. This can be used describe the character played by Klaus Kinski, but also the director of the film, who used an actual boat to haul over the mountain and hired real native Amazonians to do it.

“This iconic image (of the steamship on the mountain) demonstrates the title character’s obsession, as well as Herzog’s own struggles to conceive it. It is perhaps the pinnacle of the director’s labor, and it is arguably the most formidable and defining image of his career.”
– RUMSEY TAYLOR, SLANT MAGAZINE
