MBC Interactive Archive Project:
“NEW GERMAN FILM of the 1970s”
THE AMERICAN FRIEND – (Der amerikanische Freund)
(Presented by the Miami Beach Film Society)

As the title suggests, Wim Wenders gives homage to American style, in particular the film noir genre, in his story of a shady American art dealer (Dennis Hopper) in Europe tying a German (Bruno Ganz) into a complex vengeance plot. Even though it leads to murder, the two men form an unlikely friendship. Starring Dennis Hopper, Bruno Ganz, Lisa Kreuzer, Nicholas Ray & Samuel Fuller.

“Wenders’s international breakout is a stripped-down crime story that mixes West German and American film flavors, and it features cameos by filmmakers Jean Eustache, Samuel Fuller, and Nicholas Ray.”
