MBC Interactive Archive Project:
“NEW GERMAN FILM of the 1970s”
VERONIKA VOSS
(Presented by the Miami Beach Film Society)

Reeking of Douglas Sirkian 50s melodrama with hints of Sunset Boulevard, R.W. Fassbinder uses sarcastic wit and satire to tell a true story of a silent UFA star’s later years and her unlikely pairing with a sportswriter. It would turn out to be the last film he worked on, finishing off a dramatic career that had it’s share of similar pathos and tragedy.

“Light and shadow, those are the secrets of the cinema,” says Veronika Voss. A film in black and white, the “most beautiful colors in cinema” (Fassbinder at a press conference). Fassbinder and his cameraman, Xaver Schwarzenberger, evoke a past cinematic art whose tradition reaches back to silent film.”
