DOPE

Malcolm is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.

A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, High-school senior Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) bond over ’90s hip-hop culture, their studies and playing music in their own punk band. A chance encounter with a drug dealer named Dom lands Malcolm and company at the dealer’s nightclub birthday party; when the scene turns violent, they flee — with the Ecstasy that Dom secretly hid in Malcolm’s backpack. A wild adventure ensues as the gang tries to evade armed thugs who want the stash.

The cast, drawn from comedy, rap, TV, modeling and other spheres, is sharply on form throughout, as is Famuyiwa’s direction; the pic’s esprit is amplified by every editorial trick in the book, from split-screen to freeze-frames.
– VARIETY

A funny and often intelligent crowd-pleaser about three geeks who get smart about drug-dealing.
– HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

It’s an incredibly smart hybrid film that captures the modern life of an American teen in Inglewood, California in a way that we’ve never seen before.
– ROGEREBERT.COM

A remarkably fresh comedy… Dope is a wild ride!”
– USA TODAY

“Dope” is about the dreams and aspirations of outsiders. And while a little swollen narratively, it’s supercool vitality is much like the blithe Will Smith “Summertime” song the character’s references: something very close to a new classic.
– THE PLAYLIST

The unexpected comedy bits, great music and an insightful point of view all contribute to making “Dope” something special…
