MBC Interactive Archive Project:
“AMERICAN INDIE DEBUTS OF THE 1980s – Masters of Jewish Cinema”
(Presented by the Miami Beach Film Society)

In 1982 when lower Manhattan was in the midst of serving as a vibrant drifter central for the world, Susan Seidelman’s Smithereens tells the story of a young punk named Wren who lived it. The “no wave” film movement had begun for those who didn’t feel a part of other waves, and this film was unofficially part of that burgeoning all-American scene.

Film courtesy of Shout! Factory and the American Genre Film Archive.

“Shot on 16 mm film that captures the grit and glam of downtown in the 1980s, with an alternately moody and frenetic soundtrack by the Feelies and others, Smithereens—the first American independent film to compete for the Palme d’Or—is an unfaded snapshot of a bygone era.”
