Almost 80, mischievous, caustic, and defiantly living alone, Anthony (Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins) rejects each and every hired caretaker that his daughter, Anne (Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman), lovingly introduces. Anne is desperate for help. She can’t make daily visits anymore, and Anthony’s grip on reality is unraveling. Given the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can he cling to? Anne grieves the loss of her father as he lives and breathes before her—but doesn’t she have the right to live her own life?

Spectacular performances from Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman could garner them both more Oscar glory. THE FATHER is the astonishing feature debut of writer-director Florian Zeller, based on his award-winning play, which rightfully begged comparisons to King Lear. Mind-boggling, heartbreaking, and uncompromisingly poignant, this mesmerizing chamber piece questions the truth and the nature of reality as it cunningly lays bare the frailty of the human condition.

“At once stupendously effective and profoundly upsetting, The Father might be the first movie about dementia to give me actual chills.”
– NEW YORK TIMES

“The best film about the wages of aging since Amour eight years ago, The Father takes a bracingly insightful, subtle and nuanced look at encroaching dementia and the toll it takes on those in close proximity to the afflicted.”
– HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“Sneakily utilizing production design and uncanny good editing, The Father fascinatingly puts the viewer in the same state of distress as its main character. And in adapting his own play, the director’s carried over an intimate quality of a staged chamber drama to not just show a man dealing with dementia but also offer a way into his mind with a haunting, deeply affecting and quite memorable narrative.”
– USA TODAY

“The Father is about the suffering of old age, the importance of connection, the sick encroaching of an affliction, and ultimately, death. It doesn’t sugarcoat things, despite its sugarcoated exterior. Like its French counterpart, Michael Haneke’s Amour, it’s not an easy watch, but it’s a necessary one, a film that examines the very essence of our humanity.”
– FILM THREAT

“Entrancingly different – brought to life by a handful of brilliant performances and some very impressive sleight-of-hand.”
– INDIEWIRE
