Overview
A geologist embarks on a road trip through Brazil’s arid Sertão region, where his calculations will determine the route of an irrigation canal. In the course of his travels, he begins to record his deepest feelings about the unfamiliar terrain, and about love, loneliness, and the wife he left behind. This mysteriously beautiful road movie is a rough gem, a faltering love poem to someone who is no longer there, and a travelogue through a land that rejects the quest for surface beauty. A slow & seductive journey into the Brazilian interior, the interior of relationships and to the quest to be truthful to oneself. Directors Gomes and Aïnouz create a video diary of deliberately imperfect but seductive imagery that makes for a haunting counterpoint to the lone voice narrating the film. In Portuguese with English subtitles.REVIEWS
Strikingly original...at once barbed and narcotic.”—The New York Times“Road movies don’t get any purer...Bressonian in its austerity and transcendence.” —Village Voice“A dizzying, dazzling DIY travelogue.” —Time Out New York"The visual collage retains a consistent melancholy, resulting in an experience that's both deeply affecting and-since José never actually appears on-camera-utterly detached." -IndieWIRE"Utterly unpretentious and deeply touching." -Variety
