Overview
John Early's directorial debut plays like a Douglas Sirk melodrama that wandered onto TikTok. Early stars as Maddie Ralph, a dishwasher at a trendy L.A. food content studio who becomes an overnight sensation after her husband posts a video of her cooking. The promotion, the followers, the woman-owned artisanal chili crisp; it all comes fast, and none of it leaves room for the eating disorder Maddie's been quietly managing for years.
Written, directed, and produced by Early, with Kate Berlant as the best friend who won't stop pushing, the film commits fully to its melodrama (heightened, sincere, occasionally absurd) without ever using that style as a shield from the real subject underneath. It's a strange combination on paper: broad comedy and a genuinely serious look at bulimia, played completely straight. Somehow it holds together.
Funny, sad, and unlike anything else currently in theaters, MADDIE'S SECRET announces Early as a filmmaker with real range beyond his comedy work.
