Director Q&A

Overview

One of the most electrifying heroes of the twentieth century receives an appropriately sweeping screen biopic, rich in both historical insight and propulsive cinematic style, courtesy of visionary director Spike Lee. Built around an extraordinary performance from Denzel Washington, MALCOLM X draws on the iconic civil rights leader’s autobiography to trace his journey of empowerment, from a childhood riven by white-supremacist violence to a life of petty crime to his conversion to Islam and rebirth as a fearless fighter for Black liberation, whose courage and eloquence inspired oppressed communities the world over. Impeccably crafted by Lee and his closest creative collaborators, and buoyed by commanding performances from Angela Bassett, Delroy Lindo, Al Freeman Jr., and others, this is a passionate monument to a man whose life continues to serve as a model of principled resistance.

SPECIAL GUESTS

David Peery
Lawyer, Activist, and Founder of The Miami Coalition to Advance Racial Equity (MCARE)

Despite having a law degree from George Washington University, David Peery’s own experiences with homelessness was not due to personal irresponsibility, addiction or mental illness, but rather how homelessness is deeply rooted in poverty, racism and our societal failure to ensure that housing is a fundamental human right. In 2021, David founded MCARE in direct response to Miami’s affordable housing crisis and the City’s aggressive efforts to criminalize homelessness.

MCARE is a non-profit coalition, seeking to dismantle systemic racism that drives homelessness, healthcare inequities and voter suppression in Miami-Dade County. They view public policy through a racial equity lens: virtually all public policies either advance racial equity or increase inequities. Their Board of Directors include student leaders, human rights lawyers, physicians and social justice advocates. MCARE also features a young leaders network for advocates & peers under the age of 35 called ‘F.I.R.E.’ ak.a. ‘Friends Innovating for Racial Equity’.

David is active in several national homeless rights organizations, including serving as co-chair of the 'National Consumer Advisory Board', Secretary of the Board of Directors for the 'National Health Care for the Homeless Council', and twice serving as Interim Director of Community Organizing for the 'National Coalition for the Homeless'.

Michael Langley
Executive Director of Florida Justice Institute

Over his career, Michael Langley has worked to close both the wealth and opportunity gaps in vulnerable communities; helping develop long-term solutions to address criminal justice, economic development, education, gentrification, social enterprise, and more.

In December 2023, Michael became the Executive Director of the ‘Florida Justice Institute’. ‘FJI’ is a non-profit team of passionate advocates, skilled attorneys, and committed paralegals who work tirelessly to advance civil rights and achieve lasting change for disenfranchised and underinvested Floridians. Through a combination of advocacy and litigation, FJI aims to leverage resources to end systems of oppression so that change continues well beyond the victories in the courtroom, empowering folks who are formerly incarcerated, experiencing homelessness and poverty, and folks with disabilities.

Prior to his arrival at FJI, Michael obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, and earned both his ‘Executive Masters of Business Administration’ and ‘Masters of Legal Studies, Law and Economics’ from the University of Arizona. He served as the Director of the Social Impact & Racial Equity Advancement Project at ‘Greater Phoenix Leadership’ and as Racial Equity Advisor for the financial nonprofit, ‘DreamSpring’. Phoenix Business Journal named Michael to its prestigious ’40 Under 40’ list for his ability to deploy a robust knowledge base and skillset to effect change with decision makers and stakeholders at all levels of the government, business, and social sectors.

Reviews

"Mr. Lee means for Malcolm X to be an epic, and it is in its concerns and its physical scope.  In Denzel Washington it also has a fine actor who does for Malcolm X what Ben Kingsley did for Gandhi."
– NEW YORK TIMES

"The film is inspirational and educational - and it is also entertaining, as movies must be before they can be anything else."
– ROGER EBERT

"With Malcolm X, Lee has created a galvanizing political tragedy, the story of a leader who, through his very perception and daring, recognized that death — and only death — would be his final evolution."
– ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

"A spiritually enriching testament to the human capacity for change -- and surely Spike Lee's most universally appealing film."
– WASHINGTON POST
