When 28-year-old journalist Shiori Ito goes public in 2017 with her rape allegation by then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s biographer, she feels she has no other choice in order to change Japan’s antiquated sexual assault laws. Her press conference shocks in a society where speaking up on such matters is considered shameful. Within days, Shiori is swept into the center of Japanese politics. Directed by herself with the most personal of material, Black Box Diaries captures Shiori’s tumultuous and ultimately triumphant journey, going behind the headlines to walk in her shoes. Being both victim and journalist investigating her own case, the documentary shows that what Shiori did was not only to create social change but ultimately to keep herself alive.

George Dureau: New Orleans Artist explores the life and career of one of New Orleans’ cultural icons, the painter and photographer George Valentine Dureau. Dureau’s artistic imperative was to tell stories and his models were his protagonists. His life and his work were always inseparable, but sadly in the last decade of his life, Dureau was afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Trying to preserve his legacy, Dureau scribbled biographical notes and snapped endless rolls of the French Quarter on disposable cameras. Utilizing extensive archival documentary footage, unpublished photographs, and revealing interviews with his friends and models, George Dureau tells the story of a New Orleans that no longer exists.

Told through the eyes of his grandson, the film follows their journey through a changing medical landscape as their relationship deepens and dynamics shift.

SEVEN BLESSINGS - Sunday, April 14, 2024 12:00PM

When Marie was two years old, her Moroccan Jewish mother gave her to her barren sister. Now 40 years old and living in France, Marie still harbors feelings of anger and hurt. Despite this, she decides to have her wedding in Israel, where her large family follows the tradition of the Seven Blessings, a week of festive meals in the bride's honor. Along these seven days, old wounds and secrets surface, and the celebration turns into a bittersweet mix of food, emotions, and belated forgiveness. Seven Blessings was Israel’s most recent official entry for the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. It also was a huge success at the Ophirs, taking home 10 awards including Best Picture.
