Artist Bio
Born in Placetas, Cuba, in 1957, Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez is an experimental filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist working between Miami and Havana. She studied with Barbara Hammer and Warren Sonbert and earned a B.A. in Film Production from San Francisco State University. Her handmade 16mm films, scratched, painted and hand-colored directly on the celluloid, along with her video, performance and outdoor projection work, have earned a FAN/Knight New Work Award, Florida Individual Artist Fellowships and a residency at the Bass Museum of Art.

O Cinema South Beach presents Novia del Mediodía, a retrospective celebrating the groundbreaking work of Cuban-born experimental filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez. Spanning art, experimental film and performance installation, the exhibition gathers work from a career built on handmade 16mm cinema, found footage turned inside out, and projections that spill off the screen and into the world around us.
Rooted in Afro-Cuban spirituality, feminism and the pulse of Miami itself, Rodríguez's art is tactile, political and dreamlike all at once. Step inside and see what cinema looks like when it is made by hand.
